20 Sep Instructor Spotlight: Mallory Rankin
Meet Mallory Rankin. Mallory is a cosmetology instructor and color coach at Aveda Institute Madison. As color coach, Mallory goes to Aveda educations and trainings to learn about new and different color techniques and reports back to train the rest of the team, who, in turn, train the students. As a cosmetology instructor, she works with students in the classroom and clinic floor teaching hygiene, haircutting, color (of course!) and more. Mallory teaches the part-time (3-day) cosmetology classes at Aveda Institute Madison. Her students and her teammates enjoy the knowledge and enthusiasm she brings to school each day.
We sat down with Mallory to learn more about her career, goals and passion. Find out what motivates and inspires Mallory in our interview below.
Aveda Institute Madison: How long have you been a Cosmetologist?
Mallory Rankin: I have been in the industry for six years now.
What made you decide to start teaching Cosmetology?
I knew early on in cosmetology school that I wanted to be a teacher of color, which played a role in me becoming a certified color coach.
You said you knew early on that you wanted to teach color. Why is that?
was always inspired by color because of my own color instructor. Growing up I’ve always been artistic and hair color is the perfect outlet.
I love teaching at an Aveda Institute because I know I’m supporting a company that my own values align with. As the Green Team leader at Aveda Institute Madison, I get to be a part of making a difference towards making the school more “green”.
Note: The Green Team is an extracurricular leadership program at Aveda Institute Madison open to students of all programs. Students in the Green Team develop and implement eco-friendly initiatives for the school and present at monthly assemblies.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of working at Aveda Institute Madison is truly the students; it’s extremely fulfilling to watch them learn, set goals and succeed.
What’s something you see many students struggle to learn, and how do you approach teaching it?
I think I see students struggle the most with learning to formulate color, my approach is to always have them remember that there truly isn’t a wrong answer past knowing the standard. Color truly is limitless and there is no such thing as mistakes, just creative discoveries.
My favorite hair trend right now has to be the blunt bob. So cute.
What do you like to do on your days off?
On my days off, you can find me napping, Netflixing or spending time with family and friends.
What’s your favorite thing to watch on Netflix right now?
My favorite Netflix show has to be Forensic Files, I’m a crime junky.
What is your favorite Aveda product?
My favorite hair product is the Pramasana Protective Scalp Concentrate!
